The test of feelings, a love triangle, strikes and labor unrest at his native plant are increasingly captivating the protagonist and lead to separation from his wife. Each foray into the factory barricades turns into misfortune, but neither persuasion, nor the arrival of his wife's sister from Moscow, nor the discord with a close friend can stop Valery. But now the passions at the factory have subsided, and our hero is left with nothing: only fragments - no friends, no wife. Instead of his wife there is another woman who saved him from death...

In October 2014, Steve Wakeford, a sports broadcast editor, fell 70 metres whilst climbing a mountain known as Les Petites Jorasses in the French Alps. It was a fall that required him to be airlifted out of the mountains suffering from a number of serious injuries and resulted in him being temporarily left in a wheelchair - he is lucky to be alive. At the start of a long journey of rehabilitation, he began to ask himself some serious questions - 'Regardless of injury or trauma, why are we drawn to the mountains in the first place? Is risk an essential part of what we do? Perhaps most importantly, why is it that I am planning to climb the same route from which I fell?'

For some time now, life in the family of Kozma Josan, the chairman of a collective farm in one of the Moldovan villages, has not been going well. Lena disappears mysteriously during the winter of 1976. This is the last stop on a journey that begins in colonial Mozambique on new year's eve at 1957 gives way to 1958. Ningo, a black boy brought up by Lena's parents, and her childhood friend, comes to Lisbon to help find her, at the request of Lena's mother. Using the letters that Lena has left behind as a testament to her life, in wich she has rebelled against the challenged the powers that be, Ningo discovers the identity of her kidnapper - Jorge Matos - a former secret policeman who has followed her from Lourenço Marques, motivated by morbid desire. Lena's kidnapper dies from two inexplicable snake bites to the neck, in accordance with a legend and ritual that had been part of Lena and Ningo's childhood.

After a hurricane ravages his hometown, a grieving man breaks into an off-limits cemetery to rescue the lost remains of his brother in order to give him a proper burial.

Rivalry in a Bavarian town over a woman culminates in the unselfish rescue of one of the two men, in danger scaling a mountain peak, by the other.
